Understanding Sunscreens for Ultimate Sun Protection
SPF, PA, Numbers, Plusses- Sound Familiar?
Choosing the right sunscreen can seem like a humongous task in the myriads of sunscreens available today. However, knowing what works for you is essential in making this choice.
Let us first understand what is meant by SPF and the values that follow them.
SPF values protect against UVB rays of the sun- the ones causing damage to the top most layer of the skin leading to tanning & sun burn and in some unfortunate cases-even skin cancer. About 5% of the sun’s rays consist of UVB radiation.
Now, how is this SPF value calculated?
It is a comparison of the dose of radiation without sunscreen in comparison to the dose of radiation with sunscreen on. So, for SPF 50, if your skin normally starts to burn after 10 minutes in the sun then ideally, SPF 50 should protect you from that burning for about 500 minutes in the sun. However, the calculations are not this simple, can vary from person to person, which is why reapplication of the sunscreen is promoted.
Next up- what is PA value and the plusses?
95% of the sun’s UV rays consist of UVA Radiation, which impact the deeper layer of the skin and in the long-term cause aging and wrinkles. The PA or Protection against UVA value indicates the time it would take the sun’s rays to cause Persistent Pigment Darkening or PPD. Hence a PA++++ would offer the highest protection against UVA radiation against PA values with lesser plusses since it has a PPD score of 16 or higher.
Now that we have understood the meaning behind SPF and PA values, we now need to understand the needs of Indian Skin and the protection it needs.
